In the Alice in Wonderland world that is The Department of Health, The Daily Mail and the BBC (with Dame Polly sending messages from her Italian Villa), there is a fascinating story.
It is a 'man bites dog' story.
Our stroke services are not very good. We have poor rates of recovery and not enough specialist Stroke Units. The diagnosis is not substantiated soon enough, and thrombolysis not started early enough.
And........ [drum roll]........it is not the GPs' fault.
Yes, ladies and gentlemen, even the poisonous triad above can't blame us for poor stroke services. It is due to poor planning and execution of policy. Lack of appropriate investment, and poor strategic thinking.
That sounds to me like the responibility of the Department of Health. It is much better in Scotland, but then they don't have this maniacal obsession with privatisation like 'Lord' Darzi and the other ministers.
Maybe we ought to set up a site called iwantgoodministers.org so that people with strokes and relatives can comment on policy.
That would be a laugh. Except Stroke patients can't always laugh. I have to pick up the pieces of delays and the subsequent morbidity. So I know.
So do my patients.
