There are certain people who are, forever, associated with policy decisions that influence people's lives. Many examples are out there:
Lord Hore-Belisha gave us the Belisha Beacons
Kenneth Baker gave us Baker Days (teacher training days)
Richard Beeching introduced the Beeching Cuts in Railways
We also have the Darzi review (I've said enough about that one)
Now my staff know what I mean by a Gordon Surgery. This is a very late surgery, where I am forced to work from 6pm to 8 pm to provide spaces for commuters to attend. But of course they don't do they. It is just filled in with regular patients.
"Gosh, you're working late tonight, Jobbing Doctor" they say.
The labs are closed, the chemists are closed, the hospital consultants and secretaries have all gone home, and all I am doing is forcing my regular patients to attend later than they would have wished.
It is a Dog's Dinner of an idea. Thank you, Gordon Brown.
And Gordon's name is forever attached to it in this tiny part of our sceptr'd isle.
Grrrrr.

Well, if your practice is anything like my Gp's, that will be because all the commuters are on the daily commute at 8.30am so cannot phone for one of the said appointments, and cannot phone later on due to not being able to make personal calls during working hours, therby meaning that when they are able to phone, all the available appointments have been taken- by regular patients who can phone to book at any time, and attend at any time!
Not that this in any way makes me in the slightest bit annoyed or upset of course....
We have on-line booking that gets around this.
