Doing something slightly crazy.

I have been registered on eBay since one of the young doctors on my training scheme persuaded me of the value of this activity.

I have taken around 3 years to get my first star, a yellow star, on eBay - usually augmenting my collection of vintage Wisden's almanacs (I'll post on that another time).

However, I have never spent more than £30 on any item.

Well this week is different. I have done something slightly crazy.

I am hopeful of buying myself a Tenor Saxophone (Bb transposing). It will not be cheap, but also I think it may well be quite a bargain. My 'cello cost me £800 when I bought it: the Sax will cost me £267.00 This is a bargain, and is cheap enough so that if I don't take to it, then I haven't spent a fortune.

I hope to get great pleasure out of it. The fingering is the same as the Bb clarinet (by and large), which I know I can play, because I used to play it as a boy. My breath control as a singer is good, but my embouchure (the muscles around the mouth) will be terrible.

I want to be a latter-day John Coltrane, or Jonny Hodges. I want to be able to play the riff from 'Baker Street'. I want to look cool.

Exciting, eh?

something I have always wanted to learn and that isn't a bad price... might have to get you to suggest a suitable one for me.

You don't have to try to look cool. You ARE cool, just for trying something new! Keeps us young. Music is especially good for keeping the mind agile. I've been trying to teach myself vioin for a while. When I get frustrated with it, I play my according. Wow, my neighbours must hate me! haha

Instruments that I have bought and still have to learn;

1. guitar
2. Mandolin
3. Low whistle
4. tin whistle
5. concertina

A Bb saxophone sounds interesting. But I think I'd better work my way through the others first..

Good on you, JD. I always rather fancied a go at the sax, but my experience with instruments you blow into is limited to a couple of years of trombone in my youth. We do have a family clarinet, which one of my nieces is learning. But perhaps I will settle for disinterring the electric guitar from under the spare bed.

Good luck with the tenor sax. Bought one for my daughter a while ago and am amazed at how loud (and heavy) it is. Now have keyboard, violin, semi-acoustic guitar and (the new toy) Bb clarinet here. Well done you for having a go at something new. It is all great fun.
