Do we respect the BBC?
Many people do respect institutions, and for my part there is much that I can and will respect. How can you not love people like Jeremy Paxman and John Humphrys who ask the difficult questions and are not deflected by bland answers. But the BBC as an organisation has lost its way since the appalling episode of the report by Andrew Gilligan that resulted in the DG and Chairman both resigning as a result of pressure from Tony Blair (to his eternal shame).
Do we respect the press? Sometimes, yes. They can be a force for good, and the work of Nick Davies of the Guardian has exposed the latest phone-hacking imbroglio has demonstrated. But the good is often outweighed by the bad.
As was said in Julius Caesar by Mark Anthony
"The evil that men do lives on after them....the good is oft interred with their bones"

One of the more enjoyable things will be, for me as a Jobbing Doctor, to cease paying money to the GMC (which is now a puppet of central Government), and tell them exactly what I think of their performance in the last 10 years.
I will revoke the title "Doctor", and revert to Mister.
In 22 months time.
No hanging around: I will put on my hat, jump on my horse, and ride into the sunset - without a backward glance.
Adios.

We can also have the greatest respect for individuals who have told it as it is .
Thank you THE jobbing doctor
Good luck in your retirement; I applaud your decision to resign from the GMC, which, along with so many of our old professional organisations has lost its way and effectively become a puppet of government, largely because those at the top enjoyed their new status.
I belonged to the Institution of Electrical Engineers, which had its origins in Victorian times. But modern ideas said they had to be more inclusive, and they started to admit technicians and changed their ancient name to something I can't even remember. They connived with the government to set up some new regulatory organisation for electricians, with the result that, although I had been responsible for a number of major electrical installations during my career, I apparently could no longer certify that a 13A socket had been correctly installed without passing some Micky Mouse exam at considerable cost plus annual fees.
So immediately I retired, I resigned - what purpose would there be in continuing to be a member of an organisation which was more interested in itself than its members?
Max Hastings has written an excellent article in the Daily Mail on this very subject:
