Mumsnet

Mumsnet founder, Justine Roberts
I've never looked at Mumsnet before. It is regarded as an important and influential site for reflecting the views of Mothers who have the ability and wherewithal to use computers.

Another declaration of interest is that I am not a mum.

I was amazed to hear that it had agreed to link up with one of the crassest and worst websites that I have ever seen - yes, the execrable 'I want Great Care'. For those of you who don't know this site, it is a "rate my doctor" site that uses a hugely out of date and inaccurate database, allowing anybody to post reviews of doctors, usually anonymously. It has the names of doctors who have died (in one case I saw a doctor who had died 18 months previously still one it). Nobody in my practice of 12 doctors is on it at all.

It has been around for 3 years, and had quietly died an internet death of irrelevance. It occasional got a resuscitation (the idiots at Milton Keynes PCT linked up to it for a while).

Then mumsnet states it is "in partnership" with it. The users of mumsnet are not impressed. The points made by the users are well made and entirely valid.

Mumsnet needs to get rid of the association as quickly as possible. If it is to be taken seriously.

It's refreshing to hear that the mumsnet users have shown opposition to it and not jumped on the bandwagon.

Mumsnet is a pretty awful site too, maybe that should be sabotaged too?

you can rate your doctor over at nhs choices website anyways

ive just left a message there about a GP surgery where you need to be able to predict a week in advance that you will be seriously ill to have any chance of seeing a doctor

frankly jd your line is getting more and more insane, this country is fucking sub 3rd world, and is the the only country in the entire western world where working people have to wait a week to see a GP and have no choice of appointment slot at all

i really think you should ring around a few surgeries in different parts of the country and try and get an appointment you will be surprised!

this shit service cannot contine

whether it takes a few web sites to change it or whatever i dont know but it cannot survive

the other thing i would say is that the patients NEED to be able to stay anonymous

given the power the GP has over our lifes as the only gatekeeper to any nhs care

given that in practise we often have no choice of gp practise

the patients are in a very weak position, which is at the heart of the problem, if the patients had any buying power in this transaction at all GP surgeries would have to change overnight

I'll just stick to 'milfs.net' then.

Ah, No One is back again. Move to Birmingham, No One, I have a fantastic GP + team. If I phone in a crisis, I can see a GP as fast as I can get to the surgery and if I want a non-urgent appointment with the doctor of my choice, I can book it weeks ahead (over a month). All the doctors there are pleasant and competent as are their staff. If I phone up during mid-late morning and mid-late afternoon I can speak to a doctor on the phone.

Don't assume that because your GP doesn't live up to your expectations they're all like that, and don't assume that if you had the cash in hand to buy the GP services you want that the practice you want to register with would take you.

they are not all like that

but far too many are

there are no dynamics in the system to force improvements and change, the only current dynamic is the complaints process which is a joke

go look at nhs choices and see the masses of complaints about the crap service provided by gps to the working population in many parts of the country

we need a much more effective feedback loop where gps learn from doing what customers like and learn from upsetting customers

Ah, because of course, you've been a member of most GP practices in the country?

And if you think we're sub 3rd world, I suggest you head to the third world and experience real 3rd world healthcare.

i have been around a lot

and i have been in hospitals and doctors rooms in the 3rd world

you presumably think the shit and dirt allover the walls of the hospital closest to me right now is ok and normal?

stop, take a deep breath, and remember what you are defending

Fabulous, an astroturfer from a medical company. Doncha just love the t'internet one minute you're having a perfectly civil discussion and the next minute some wanker who is paid to spread corporate PR shit all over boards and blogs pops up.

I would probably bet my entire yearly income that your local hospital does not have "shit and dirt" on the wall.
