The Conservatives, the Liberals. the Private Health Industry, the "Future Forum" and ...... the Royal College of Surgeons

Statue of John Hunter FRS
These are the people who love the new Health and Social Care Bill.

The rest of the people who work in the Health Service (all the other Royal Colleges, the Nurses, the Midwives, the Unions and around 95-98% of doctors) are solidly against it.

Why are the Surgeons in support of the Bill. Is it because they all want knighthoods? Is it because they see a big commercial opportunity for themselves? Is it on a point of high principle?

I think we can all do the maths.

Are there surgeons out there who disagree with their college's principled stand?

Are you suggesting the surgeons after a cut of the profits, or as a group they harbor deep anti-NHS sentiments?

I don't understand why their assessment is different from everyone else's: they must be looking through a different prism.

There are no proper surgeons, in proper hospitals that agree with the bill, and nor do consultants in other specialities. Don't think for one minute that Royal Colleges represent the views of ordinary jobbing consultants.

You forgot. There is *one* GP in Doncaster who wants Lansley's Bill. I know, because Cameron said so in PMQs today ;-)

My husband, a surgeon, e-mailed RCS yesterday to say in no uncertain terms that the RCS was not representing his views, and it was time they surveyed their membership.
Also that training and standards would be adversely affected by the Bill and it was time they got on and opposed it.

I'm sure he's not the only one. I hope not anyway.

I don't understand why the BMA isn't balloting for industrial action on this issue rather than pensions, which is a battle they are most likely to lose.
